Animal Cold

Introduction: Animal cold is an acute systemic disease with upper respiratory tract mucosal inflammation as the main symptom. It mainly occurs in seasons with changeable climate. The incidence rate of young dogs and cats is relatively high, and it is a common disease of respiratory organs. Pay attention to the identification of diseases similar to colds. Basic principles of treatment: intensive care, antipyretic and analgesic, expelling wind and cold, preventing secondary infection.

Animal cold is an acute systemic disease with inflammation of the upper respiratory tract mucous membrane as the main symptom. It mainly occurs in seasons with changeable climate. The incidence rate of young dogs and cats is relatively high, and it is a common disease of respiratory organs.

Etiology

The main reason is that the climate is changeable, the body is attacked by cold, the resistance is reduced, and the bacteria that often exist in the upper respiratory tract multiply to cause the disease, such as:

  • Sleep in an air-conditioned room or under an electric fan in summer;
  • Spend the night outdoors in spring and autumn;
  • Did not add hot water in the bath, or fail to dry with a hair dryer in time after bathing;
  • Long-distance transportation, overwork, malnutrition, etc. lead to a decrease in the body’s resistance;

Symptom

It often occurs after exposure to cold. The main symptoms:

Mental depression, like lying down and not moving; loss of appetite, elevated body temperature, severe chills, bowed waist and trembling. But when puppies are exposed to cold, their body temperature can drop to about 36°C, their necks are soft, they cannot stand up and walk around, their eyelids flicker when touched, their nostrils are pinched, and nasal fluid flows out. If they are rescued in time, they can recover within 1 day.

Nasal itching, often scratching the nose with the forelimbs; runny nose, sneezing, coughing; palpation sensitivity of the larynx and trachea.

Watery discharge from eyes and nose

Resource description: The dog suffers from mild depression, loss of appetite, tearing, watery nasal fluid, sometimes coughing or artificially induced cough positive.

Conjunctival hyperemia flushing, tearing.

Chest auscultation: increased alveolar breath sounds, increased heart sounds, and rapid heartbeat.

Diagnostic Points

  • Sudden onset after exposure to cold;
  • Increased temperature, cough, runny nose;
  • Therapeutic diagnosis can be carried out when necessary, and if the application of antipyretic drugs is effective, it can be diagnosed as a cold;

Diagnostic Points

Key points for identifying diseases similar to colds

Item Similarities to a cold Differences from a cold
Canine distemper (with stage 1) Slightly elevated body temperature, depression, loss of appetite, sneezing, coughing, runny nose It is contagious, with high body temperature (40-41°C), biphasic fever, decreased WBC at the beginning of the disease, and neurological symptoms often appear 2 weeks after the onset. The canine distemper kit can be used for rapid detection.
Bronchitis cough, runny nose Cough (severe short cough, dry cough); rough lung sounds with rales; larynx and trachea were negative for induced cough.
Pneumonia Elevated body temperature, depression, loss of appetite, cough. There are rales on lung auscultation, dullness on percussion, X-ray examination, and increased shadows.
Rhinitis Runny nose, sneezing, conjunctival hyperemia, tearing. Nasal mucosa flushing, swelling, unilateral or bilateral nasal discharge, ranging from serous, mucous to purulent, and even blood samples. When the nasal mucosa is eroded, mouth breathing may be caused by narrowed airway; body temperature does not rise;

Treat

Basic principles of treatment: intensive care, antipyretic and analgesic, expelling wind and cold, preventing secondary infection.

  1. Strengthen care: keep warm, dry as soon as possible after bathing, etc.; increase nutrition and supplement vitamins;
  2. Antipyretic and analgesic: Antongding;
  3. Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory: ampicillin 20mg/kg intramuscular injection, once a day;
  4. Vitamins: 1~2ml of sodium camphorsulfonate, 1~2ml of 25% VC, 1~2ml of compound VB, subcutaneous injection, once every 12 hours; or 2~4 tablets of Shimusheng orally. (Vitamin drugs. It is used for the prevention and treatment of B vitamin deficiency, loss of appetite, and indigestion. It is the dry cell of ale yeast. It contains B vitamins, vitamin B1 0.1~0.2mg per gram, vitamin B2 0.04~ 0.06mg, niacin 0.03~0.06mg. In addition, it also contains vitamin B6, B12, folic acid, inositol and some enzymes, such as invertase, maltase, etc.)
